Wildlife SOS is a non-profit organization that carries out the task of treating and saving wild animals in India. Wildlife SOS had been in existence since 1995 in India. Apart from treating Pachyderms; example elephants, the Indian Wildlife SOS also treats wild animals like turtles, bears, leopards, etc.
The major challenge of elephants as wild animals in India is the problem of increased tourists population. Another aspect is how the Western sees India as a kind of magical and foreign country, this however makes elephants have special value in India. Due to this stereotyping, many people still believe that Indians ride elephants and so, they also want to share the experience when they come to India. This leads to the abuse of the animal especially when they are used in riding camps, temples, circuses, etc by some tourists. Elephant abuse is so common in India and overlooking them will lead to the increased complications of diseases among these animals. Therefore, the elephant hospital had been established in India as a ray of light for them.
Whenever a diseased or injured elephant is brought into the hospital, the veterinarians undergo a complete evaluation of the animal. As most of these elephants are suffering from malnutrition and neglect, they have developed debilitating physical issues. The elephant hospital concentrates on treating those old and injured elephants. It has all the modern and sophisticated facilities needed for this task to enable a proper analysis of their physical conditions. They have ultrasound, digital radiology, pathology lab, laser therapy, hydrotherapy pool, and a special medical hoist to properly lift these large animals and put them in the treatment area. When there is need for a general check-up, the elephant medical center has a large digital weight scales, including other necessary laboratory equipment.
The elephant medical center in India has a portable X-Ray machine, together with a special foot-care tools. Since there are many sick elephants that need overnight observation, wildlife SOS Elephant hospital is fitted with infrared cameras so that veterinarians can observe and monitor the animal all through the night.
Holly is one of the patients that was admitted into the hospital. She was used for street-riding and was maltreated by her owner. She can't see. When she first entered the hospital, all her body was totally covered with untreated abscesses. She wasn't fed properly and Malnutrition made her develop arthritis in her hind legs. She needed medical attention urgently but her owner did not think it was necessary.
In the wildlife SOS hospital, Holly receives a better treatment. A team of veterinarians is doing their best by trying to treat her painful arthritis, with the help of therapeutic ultrasonography and cold laser therapy. The veterinarians are also treating the abscesses on a daily basis and trying to make her healthy and strong by giving her the right amount of nutritious food.

After treating the animals, they are taken to Wildlife SOS’s two elephant sanctuaries located in India: The Elephant Rescue Centre is located in Yamunanagar while The Elephant Conservation and Care Centre is located in Mathura. Thus, these animals can spend the rest of their lives in peace and under proper protection and treatment.
Abused animals need our help and Wildlife SOS is doing their best to prevent animals abuse. We need to do our part as well and condemn all sort of animal abuse taking place in our communities. Animals are our friends and neighbors. We should treat all animals with the same love and respect as unto humans.
